HIP HOP 101: LETS MAKE BEATS

Duration: 60-90 minutes

Description: Shining Soul gives youth the tools to make electronic music. We provide an interactive and hands on experience demonstrating the basics of Beat Making. Starting with an overview of the equipment, we explain the process of sampling and sequencing. In addition we discuss what “Hip Hop” culture is as a whole and share how Hip Hop music has been a tool in our own lives to get our voices out. This initial skill share session is intended to expose youth to the art of Hip Hop production by making their own beats, in hopes to empower them to further advance to our eight hour curriculum workshop.

BEAT MAKING SKILL SHARE/HIP HOP IS RESISTANCE:

***Note: Duration is divided into multi-classes to meet desired needs***
Eight week- one hour per week course
Four week-two hour per week course
Two day-four hour per day course

Description: Shining Soul offers an intermediate curriculum that focuses on the four steps of Beat production: Digging, sampling, sequencing and song arrangement. Participants will learn each step in depth and identity signal flow between the steps with the provided equipment. Once youth have grasped the basics of making beats, we encourage them to write lyrics to their newly rendered sequences for the completion of a song composition. A performance/beat display can be implemented at the end of the course for participants to express the culmination of their efforts to peers/public. Also, throughout the course, we will shed light on Hip Hop origins and elements. We will explain how historically Hip Hop was and still is a creative response to resist the negative impacts of the social inequalities that exist, and how this culture can bring forth positive growth and balance in one's life.

History:
In 2007 we first introduced our initial skill-share Beat Making Workshop. Since then, our workshops have been held in public libraries, recreation centers and community events throughout the Phoenix area.
In the past year, we have expanded our outreach throughout Arizona; Flagstaff, Tucson and the Tohono O'odham Nation. The positive feedback from participants, the rave reviews from youth coordinators and community members, led us to expand our initial skill-share workshop to an eight hour curriculum.

GOALS/VISION:

-Create spaces in communities for youth to musically express themselves via Hip Hop music by providing an overview of the equipment and the process of sampling and sequencing

-Explore Hip Hop culture “values” and how they connect to everyday life struggles, especially in a socially empowered and resistance context

-Expose youth to the origins/elements of Hip Hop culture

-Create opportunities for relationship and affinity building with hip hop youth in urban and rural areas (ex: Phoenix/Tohono O’odham Nation)

-Address and discuss the issues that affect our domestic life and communities (SB1070, Border Militarization, Imperialism, etc…)

-Create and provide organic outlets for youth to get involved in their community

- Support the youth voice, ideas, actions, and initiatives by providing necessary guidance, mentoring, skill sharing and tools
